Hey Change Maker!  My guest this week is Sarah Jaekle of the Sifa Collective.  The Sifa Collective invests in women so they can become successful small-business owners who, in turn, invest in their communities. 

 

ABOUT SARAH:  

Sarah Jaekle is the Advocacy Coordinator for Sifa Collective, a non-profit for marginalized women out of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. She's passionate about helping women from all walks of life understand their worth and empowering them to find their unique voice. She and her husband reside in Cincinnati, OH but frequent their friends in Tanzania often.

 

ABOUT SIFA COLLECTIVE:

Sifa Collective’s mission is to equip marginalized women with hope in the gospel,  training in artisanal skills and the provision of tools needed to launch their own local business. We invest in women so they can become successful small-business owners who, in turn, invest in their communities. 

 

Sifa Collective is faith-based, gospel-centered and driven by a desire to see the tools of Sifa used in the hands of women, churches and businesses in Dar es Salaam and throughout East Africa. Sifa Collective has been founded on the principle of “Train, Equip  and Release.” We believe that once equipped, our students are ready and should be set free and encouraged to fly on their own.

ABOUT DEVIN:

Devin Hibbard is the Founder and CEO of Street Business School—an entrepreneurial training program that helps women living in poverty go from an average of $1.35 to $4.19 per day by starting their own businesses. Through a social franchise model, Street Business School is now in over 20 countries and will reach 1 million women by 2027. 

 

Prior to Street Business School, Devin founded and led BeadforLife, a social enterprise which helped women living in poverty earn income through the production of handmade paper jewelry. BeadforLife pioneered the global cottage industry of paper jewelry, inspiring hundreds of other organizations and benefitting tens of thousands of women. Devin’s work has been featured in Entrepreneur, Barron’s, The New York Times, Oprah, The Today Show and dozens of other publications. 

 

Devin is a frequent speaker about the relationship between belief in oneself and business success.  She believes that we can end extreme poverty in our lifetimes.

Hey Change Maker!  My guest this week is Megan Fischer of Sweet Cheeks Diaper Bank.  Did you know that diapers are not covered by any type of government assistance?  Sweet Cheeks distributes over 2 million diapers to those in need in their community each year.

 

ABOUT MEGAN:

Megan started Sweet Cheeks Diaper Bank in 2015 after learning diapers weren’t covered under any government assistance programs. She has grown the organization into one of the largest basic needs banks in the country, and with a team of 5 staff and hundreds of volunteers, distributes more than 2 million diapers and 550,000 period products annually from a 16,000 sq ft facility in Cincinnati. Megan is a Miami ’08 alumnae with degrees in Journalism and Creative Writing, and worked in higher-ed publishing before leaving the corporate world to run her nonprofit full-time. She currently serves on the board of Cincinnati-based nonprofit Leadership Council for Nonprofits and is on the Advisory Committee for the National Diaper Bank Network. Megan is a graduate of BOLD (Board Orientation & Leadership Development) Class 3 and a member of C-Change Class 15. 

 

ABOUT SWEET CHEEKS DIAPER BANK:

Sweet Cheeks Diaper Bank is one of three programs of COVERD Greater Cincinnati. Founded in 2015, Sweet Cheeks distributes over 2 million diapers a year into the community. As requests for more and different basic hygiene items came in, the organization expanded in 2018 to create Tidal Babe Period Bank, which distributes over half a million period products each year. During the pandemic, a third (and final!) program was piloted, Fly & Dry Basic Needs Bank, which serves adults with incontinence products.

Hey Change Maker!  My guest this week is Rebecca Harver of HOPE International.  HOPE International offers Christ-centered financial services in 15 countries around the world, combining entrepreneurship and the Gospel to fight poverty.

ABOUT REBECCA:

Rebecca first learned about microfinance in college while working with Guinea Pig Farmers in Ecuador and instantly fell in love! Since then, she has worked in domestic microfiance with Accesity (previously Accion San Diego) and now in International microfinance with HOPE International since 2017.  She is originally from San Diego, CA and has been residing in the Dominican Republic for the last 4 years, where she met her now husband Diego. They were married in March 2021. She is passionate about poverty alleviation and empowering those whose voices are rarely heard. She sees Christ Centered financial services as a key element in a holistic approach to poverty alleviation and loves watching how as little as $50 can change a whole family's life and trajectory. 

 

ABOUT HOPE INTERNATIONAL:

HOPE International offers Christ-centered financial services in 15 countries around the world, combining entrepreneurship and the Gospel to fight poverty. HOPE's methodology is focused on women and centered around these four principles: Christ-centered training, discipleship, opportunities to safely save, and business loans. HOPE also partners with local like-minded organizations in some of the countries served to support and expand existing efforts in poverty alleviation through financial services.
