005 - April Berg, The Aruna Project

November 30, 2020

*TRIGGER WARNING & PARENTAL ADVISORY NOTICE*

Hey Change Maker!  My guest this week is April Berg, cofounder of the Aruna Project, an impact driven athleisure brand.  In this episode, April and I chat about some sensitive topics around the issue of human trafficking.  If you have little ones around, you may want to come back and listen at another time.

ABOUT APRIL:

April Berg is the Co-Founder of Aruna Project. After her collegiate athletic career came to an end, she has enjoyed running and fitness. April worked as a nurse in internal medicine before leaving that field to serve communities in China and India. Her time spent caring for women in the brothels of India has developed a deep desire for justice on behalf of the enslaved.  The combination of her passion to serve the enslaved and enjoyment of fitness served as a key catalyst to the creation of Aruna, an impact driven Athleisure brand creating lifelong freedom for victims of human trafficking through employment marked by holistic care. All our products are handcrafted by women freed, employed and empowered. She continues to develop the customer experience within Aruna to fuel the organization to greater growth and greater impact in bringing and sustaining freedom. April is married to Ryan and lives in Cincinnati with their three children.

ABOUT ARUNA PROJECT:

Aruna is an impact driven Athleisure brand. Through our products and events you can bring freedom to victims of human trafficking while celebrating freedom in your own adventure.

MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:

Things you can do to make an impact on human trafficking:

  • Reduce your monthly spending by $100 and give it to organizations that are having an impact on the specific lives of those who have been trafficked.
  • Share about anti-trafficking organizations’ work on social media and get others to do the same to amplify the voice of survivors
  • Purchase slave free products, better yet, purchase products produced ethically by survivors of trafficking
  • Join in an Aruna Run or apply to host one if there isn’t one in your city
  • If you know of someone struggling with pornogrpahy - help them fight it. Demand drives trafficking. Porn fuels demand. Get rid of the fuel, reduce the demand, decrease those who are victimized.

003 - Rachel Ross, Forget Me Not Ministries

October 28, 2020

Hey Change Maker!  My guest this week is Rachel Ross, founder and executive director of Forget Me Not Ministries, a nonprofit organization that is educating, embracing and equipping the Roma for Christ.

ABOUT RACHEL:

Rachel Ross is an adoptive mama with two beautiful children, Izabella and Izaiah. She is a graduate of Lincoln Christian University, and the founding director of Forget Me Not Ministries in Tinca, Romania. Rachel is working with the Roma gypsies to equip, educate, and empower them in order to prevent abandonment, abuse, trafficking, and child marriages. God gave Rachel a heart for the abandoned and for Romania in junior high, growing up in Las Vegas. He has taken her on an incredible journey over the past 17 years living in Romania, and after she began working with abandoned babies and children, her passion grew to help break the cycles the Roma community are often caught in, allowing families to stay together and the number of orphans in Romania to decrease. Rachel’s heart is to keep Christ at the center of all Forget Me Not projects and truly believes that personal, community, and generational transformation are possible with God.

ABOUT FORGET ME NOT MINISTRIES:

Based in Tinca, Romania, Forget Me Not Ministries is working to break the destructive cycles of poverty that the Roma are trapped in due to racial descrimination, lack of education, and an absence of jobs.  Each program is designed to bring dignity and empowerment to the Roma by showing them that they are capable and worthy.

Hey Change Maker!  My guest this week is Bethany Tran, founder of The Root Collective, an ethical fashion brand working with independent workshops in Guatemala.

ABOUT BETHANY:

Bethany Tran is a problem solver. She left a stable career in marketing to start The Root Collective because the lack of jobs in underserved communities wasn’t being addressed. She lives in Raleigh, NC with her husband, two dogs, chickens and a parade of foster dogs constantly in and out of the house. She likes to ferment things in her kitchen, thinks pizza should be its own food group, and that unicorns just might exist.
